Dustin Pedroia’s fifth-inning double off Daniel Cabrera marked the sixth time a Red Sox [team stats] second baseman reached 40 doubles in a season. But his evening ended on a sour note by getting ejected in the eighth inning.
Pedroia, who became the first Sox second baseman to reach 40 doubles since Jody Reed collected 42 in 1991, tried to check his swing on a 3-1 pitch from Lance Cormier, which first base ump Alfonso Marquez called a strike.
Thinking he had drawn a walk, Pedroia looked up in amazement and saw Marquez demonstrating the swing, which he interpreted as mocking.
