Sign Varitek...
October 24, 2008
Don't be a fool and offer him a one-year contract. If you do, he walks. Is he only 36? Offer him a three-year deal at whatever he wants. A twenty or thirty million dollar window won't kill the organization. Letting him go will.
Here are my thoughts on the matter:
First, he's Varitek. He can't have a worse season than he did this year. He's been going through a divorce = its a shock to the system which takes a bad season to snap out of. All the freaking egg-turds who have judged and sentenced him should be forced to write two-page essays on what the f*&k they know and don't know.
Second, if you look at his capabilities, he outmatches every catcher in baseball. Remeber the good times?
Third, a timeshare between Cash and someone who is hot now but will end up being a " market correction" will f*&k everything up so bad that we will be competing with the Yankees for third or fourth place in the AL East.
Fourth, it was Varitek, and not Ramirez, who played the critical role in defeating NY in the ALCS in 2004. He has a much cleaner swing than Ramirez, and he WILL hit home runs. Plus, he catches the best pitchers in baseball. With all due respect, some of our stellar relief pitchers wouldn't have a job if it wasn't for Varitek.
Fifth, Cash. Can't we get a more mature backup catcher? Is Elston Howard still with us? Jesus H. Christ.
Lastly, remember the time Varitek protected his pitcher against an unruly Alex Rodriguez. That's one small reason the he has that "C" on his chest.
Don't try and disagree with me. You know I'm right. The dumping of Ramirez was the best thing that ever happened to us. Thanks, Theo. But letting go of the best catcher in baseball has much more serious implications. Sometimes its about the good stuff that's inside of you.
