1958: Jackie Jensen is named American League MVP, ending a four year run that a Yankee has won the award. Jensen (.286, 35, 122) is an unexpected winner as he played on a non-contender.
1975: Davis Jonathan “JD” Drew is born in Valdosta, Georgia. Drew joined the Sox in 2007 signing a five year contract at 70 Million Dollars, with a clause that would allow the team to opt out after the third year if his preexisting injury causes him to miss significant time. Drew would hit a clutch home run in game six of the 2007 American League Championship Series to keep Boston’s playoff dreams alive. In 2008 in the last Mid-Summer Classic to be play in Yankees Stadium Drew would hit the last All Star Game home run in “The House that Ruth Built” and nabbed the MVP Award.
1962: Boston sends Don Schwall and Jim Pagliaroni to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Dick Stuart and Jack Lamabe.
2007: The Red Sox finalize a three year deal with World Series MVP Mike Lowell. The 33-year-old third baseman wanted a four year deal but choose to stay with the World Champions despite long and more lucrative offers.
