Youkilis is the real deal
May 11, 2008

Ever since Kevin Youkilis came up in the majors he has always tried to stand out in a city where making your name known is a difficult task when you are surrounded by some of the biggest names in baseball. However Youkilis, or Youk, has made a difficult task look easy, he has done anything he needed to get his name out there. Lets start in 2004, Youkilis made 72 appearances and went deep 7 times. Youk mainly played third when Bill Mueller was absent or injured. Flopping between the Sox and AAA Portland Youkilis waited his turn and was in the dug-out for the 2004 world series. The 2005 season was almost like dejavu. But finally in 2006 every thing finally paid off. Youkilis found that he could get a role in the Sox line-up if he were to play first instead of his native third because of the addition of the veteran Mike Lowell. Youkilis took advantage of this opportunity and played first. Hailed as the "greek god of walks" Youkilis took 91 free passes to first,13 long balls and 72 RBI's. Youkilis really help the sox in 2007 as he hit 16 homers with 82 RBI's and kept the walks coming as he took 83 bases on balls. His defense also got some recognition and he ended the season with a gold glove. Now in 2008, Youkilis is really fulfilling his role in the Sox line-up and has become a fan favorite. Youkilis is a great example of a player who will do anything for a shot at the majors and has made the best out of it. Not only as a power hitter only, but a flawless fielder, Kevin Youkilis really is the real deal.

Nicely done but in reality Youk is all about patience at the plate and base hits. He does not consider himself a power hitter, and quite frankly neither do I. reason being is that power hitters go to the plate looking for the home run pitch where as Youk is looking to get on base. His on base percentage is high because of the patience he shows at the plate. Don't expect alot of power from a line drive hitter. Still nicely done ...View More

ncsoxfan..
It doesn't seem that long ago he was traveling the "Youkilis" highway, going back and forth from Pawtucket to Boston. But then again it feels like 20 years ago! He always has been a true Dirtdawg!

i had the pleasure of watching mr. youkilis play here in portland and he played with the same tanacity as he does now , in the big park . someone called him a homerun hitter the other night ,but , i have to agree with ncsoxfan on his point that , he's all about patience . that's how you win ballgames , the walk and singles , manufactured runs
